Dr. Biplab Biswas, Assistant Professor at the University of Burdwan Department of Geography, is a recipient of the Raman Fellowship for Post-Doctoral Research for Indian Scholars in the United States of America. Raman Fellowships provide Indian Scholars an opportunity to collaborate with researchers in the United States, and allows scholars to contribute to higher education with an enhanced global perspective. Raman Scholars expand their research capacity through training in advanced techniques and technologies while forging long-term relationships with distinguished experts across the world. This year, Dr. Biswas will be working with Dr. Naresh Kumar (Associate Professor, Division of Environment & Public Health) on atmospheric remote sensing of air pollution. He will develop air pollution estimates and study its effects on respiratory health in West Bengal, India. This study will facilitate the development of an air pollution health risk surveillance system.
Dr. Marine Gegelashvili, Associate Professor at Ilia State University in Tbilisi, Georgia, is the recipient of a Fulbright Visiting Scholar Award. Dr. Gegelashvili has an interdisciplinary background that includes psychiatry, medicine, and psychology. The Fulbright Program is a flagship international educational exchange program designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries. For six months, Dr. Gegelashvili will collaborate with Dr. Seth J. Schwartz (Professor, Division of Prevention Science & Community Health) to investigate Georgian and American youth in terms of various dimensions of identity and health outcomes. Dr. Gegelashvili has conducted research on the Georgian transition to independence and its effects on the identity development and mental health of young people. Her aim for the Fulbright study is to compare the Georgian context for identity development against the American context where the majority of identity research has been conducted.
