Graduate Student Recognized for Leadership and Public Health Impact

Jahn Jaramillo has been named the recipient of the 10th Anniversary Student of the Year Award – Graduate, an honor recognizing his exceptional leadership, professional growth, and commitment to advancing public health through research and community engagement.

“Jahn has significantly contributed to research by leading innovative studies dedicated to HIV prevention among Latino sexual minority men, which have the potential to inform future public health interventions and policies in South Florida,” said Viviana Horigian, M.D., M.H.A., professor and director of Public Health Education, who nominated him for the award.

As a fourth-year Ph.D. student in Prevention Science and Community Health, Jaramillo has demonstrated a strong dedication to HIV prevention among Latino sexual minority men.

His work with the REACH Equity team has led to innovative studies aimed at informing public health interventions and policies in South Florida. In 2024 alone, he published four first-author articles, presented research at the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies conference, and penned an op-ed advocating for investments in peer-led HIV prevention initiatives.

Jaramillo’s commitment to addressing health disparities is further underscored by his success in securing competitive funding. In March 2024, he received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) F31 award with a perfect score—an achievement that supports his efforts to culturally adapt HIV prevention interventions for Spanish-speaking immigrant Latino sexual minority men. His work bridges the gap between research and real-world application, ensuring that prevention strategies reach those most affected by structural barriers to care.

Beyond research, Jaramillo has been instrumental in fostering collaborations with community organizations such as Care Resource and Latinos Salud, working to expand access to PrEP, HIV testing, and behavioral health services. His engagement with a Latino Community Advisory Board has strengthened partnerships and informed community-driven solutions to health inequities.

His leadership has also been recognized on a national scale, including invitations to speak at PRIDE events and the prestigious NIH Mental Health's 75th Anniversary Event, where he was the only student presenter among a distinguished panel of experts.

Jaramillo’s contributions extend to academic mentorship as well. He has guided M.P.H. students in research initiatives, assisted Ph.D. applicants, and served on panels for the Office of Prestigious Awards & Fellowships, offering insights drawn from his experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Thailand. His dedication to mentorship and professional development aligns with the mission of the Toppel Awards, which celebrate students who exemplify leadership and career achievement.

Jaramillo’s career trajectory reflects a deep commitment to public health. Before pursuing his Ph.D., he served as a Global Health Fellow and Public Health Advisor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with experience at the World Health Organization (WHO). His international and domestic work has shaped policy and research initiatives, particularly in migration health and HIV prevention. His academic achievements include participation in the NIH Mental Health’s CHANGE Training Program (T32) and the Northwestern University Summer Intensive Program in Intersectional HIV Science, reinforcing his role as a leader in HIV behavioral research.

The Toppel Awards celebrate individuals who contribute meaningfully to professional development, and Jaramillo embodies this mission. His research, advocacy, and mentorship efforts have made a lasting impact on public health, positioning him as a deserving recipient of the Student of the Year Award.
