LaShae Rolle, M.P.H., C.P.H., a Ph.D. student in Prevention Science & Community Health at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, has turned her battle with cancer into a mission to advocate for young adults and marginalized communities affected by the disease.
Diagnosed with multicentric breast cancer, a rare type of breast cancer where multiple tumors form separately and are likely located in different quadrants of the breast, Rolle has used her experience and knowledge to shape her career in public health and cancer research.
Powerlifting and Resilience
Four weeks before her diagnosis, Rolle won a powerlifting competition, taking home the Best Female Lifter title. As a lifelong athlete, she continues to exercise post-surgery and throughout her chemotherapy and radiation treatments. She continues using powerlifting to manage the physical and emotional side effects of her treatment.
"We know that exercise can improve the side effects of chemo and radiation," she said. "It can improve your mental health, too."
Her experience inspired her to create Strong After Cancer, a platform where she shares her fitness journey, offers support to cancer patients working to regain mobility after a mastectomy, and provides guidance on exercising at different stages of cancer treatment.
Through her Instagram page, @strongaftercancer, she connects with a broader community, offering inspiration and practical tips for staying active during cancer treatment. “I want to be the person I was looking for when I was diagnosed,” said Rolle, referring to the lack of fitness guidance for active individuals undergoing cancer treatment. “I want to be the person I was looking for when I was diagnosed,” said Rolle, referring to the lack of fitness guidance for active individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
Her advocacy has since resonated with many in the cancer community, with followers thanking her for showing them that it is possible to remain active during treatment. “Some people have messaged me saying, ‘I am channeling my inner strong after cancer,’” she shared. “It is incredibly inspiring to see how my journey has motivated others.”
From Diagnosis to Advocacy
Rolle’s work goes beyond fitness.
As an aspiring cancer disparities researcher, she is committed to improving cancer outcomes among marginalized and minority communities. Through her research, she aims to address inequities in cancer care, particularly for those who often face barriers to early diagnosis and treatment.
Her own experience with cancer has deeply informed her research focus. "As someone who has lived through this, I understand the unique challenges young adults and sidelined communities face when dealing with cancer," she said. "My goal is to help ensure they receive the care, support, and attention they deserve."
Rolle’s holistic approach, combining physical strength, mental well-being, and healthy eating, helped her maintain resilience while continuing her full-time Ph.D. studies during treatment. “Diet and mental strength were key to my perseverance,” she emphasized.
A National Platform for Advocacy
With her story gaining national recognition, Rolle was featured on NBC’s Today Show in October 2024 during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
During the segment, Rolle shared her powerful journey with hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager, inspiring viewers with her message of resilience and strength. “Cancer might take a few physical things away from me, but it will not change me on the inside," she declared. “Nothing is going to stop me from becoming a doctor.”
Reflecting on her background as an athlete, Rolle explained how her competitive mindset helped her approach cancer with determination. “I have always been an athlete, always competing. For me, cancer was not going to win,” she said.
Rolle emphasizes the importance of early detection and self-awareness, encouraging young people to learn how to perform self-breast exams and know their bodies. “Get to know your body,” she advised. “It could save your life.”
Looking ahead, Rolle is committed to advancing public health initiatives aimed at cancer prevention, education, and care, with a particular focus on underrepresented communities. She is also developing tailored lifestyle interventions designed to improve both physical and mental health outcomes for diverse minority and underserved groups undergoing cancer treatment.
Rolle’s story is not only one of personal triumph but also of her dedication to using her platform and experiences to uplift others. As an advocate, researcher, and athlete, she continues to inspire those around her while pushing forward in her career to make a lasting impact on public health.
Her determination to continue her Ph.D. studies, despite the challenges of cancer treatment, and her commitment to her research highlight her dedication to improving health outcomes for those most in need. As she forges ahead in her career, Rolle’s voice will continue to be a powerful force in advocating for young adults and socially excluded communities affected by cancer.
