Projects in the PERLA group serve to spread knowledge and practice of science-based approaches to the prevention of health and behavior problems throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Our focus is in four areas of prevention science: First, we examine risk and protective factors that predict or buffer adverse health outcomes like youth alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, violence and delinquency, and depression and anxiety. Second, we work on developing and adapting interventions to be effective, culturally competent, locally appropriate, and highly effective. Third, we assess the impact of preventive interventions to ensure that they are having intended effects on outcomes. And fourth, we facilitate high-fidelity implementation of interventions to maximize their impact and to be sustainable for long-term use.
